About the Project

The NJ Route 35 Bridge over NJ Route 71 (Union Avenue), Bridge Replacement (Structure No. 1310-151) Concept Development Study project is located in Borough of Brielle in Monmouth County, NJ.

NJDOT identified a need for a Concept Development (CD) Study for the NJ Route 35 Bridge over NJ Route 71 (Union Avenue) to address the structural and geometric deficiencies of the existing bridge. The bridge has been recommended for replacement by the Bridge Management System (BMS) due to the poor condition of the deck.

The purpose of the project is to address the poor condition of the existing structurally deficient structure and recommend a Preliminary Preferred Alternative (PPA) for its rehabilitation or replacement for advancement. Goals and objectives of the project include the following:

Improve safety
Maintain access
Minimize or eliminate substandard design elements along Route 35 and Route 71 within the project limits
Avoid, minimize, or mitigate environmental impacts
Avoid or minimize right-of-way impacts
Minimize impact to utilities within the project limits
Address bicycle and pedestrian compatibility
Develop an expedited construction schedule that minimizes delays to the public

The Proposed Project

Several alternatives were evaluated before identifying a PPA. The PPA involves the use of prefabricated superstructure and substructure units. The proposed single-span structure will have a width of 106′-10 1/4″ and a length of 115′. This alternative was selected as the PPA due to the shorter construction duration, constructability, and future maintenance needs compared to other alternatives.
